Plain 1/8-inch acrylic from the home center. No insulation, no drip coating, but same-day, cut to fit, and fine for a cold frame, a lean-to, or replacing one cracked pane.

Greenhouse glazing is a fight between light and heat. You want as much sunlight as possible through the roof and as little of your heating bill going out through it. Polyethylene film is cheap and lasts three years. Glass lasts forever, weighs a ton, and shatters in hail. Polycarbonate is tough and well insulated but starts at 76 percent light transmission for a 16 mm panel and slowly yellows. Acrylic is the material that gets the light number right, holds it for decades, and still insulates, at the cost of being more expensive up front and less impact-resistant than polycarbonate.

For a greenhouse you plan to own for twenty years, the arithmetic favors acrylic. The University of Arkansas greenhouse program puts acrylic bi-wall at 87 to 93 percent light transmission with a 20 to 25 year life and minimal light loss over ten years, and calls it a popular choice. How we evaluated

We have not glazed a greenhouse with each of these. Rankings come from manufacturer data sheets, distributor specifications, university extension guidance, and grower reports, weighed on:

  • Light transmission, both at installation and after ten years, because that is what the warranty actually promises.
  • Insulation, as published R-value or U-value.
  • Warranty, and whether it is prorated.
  • Weight and handling, which determines the frame you need.
  • Price for the coverage, per bundle and per square foot.

Prices are as listed in September 2026. Every one of these panels ships by freight and most were out of stock at the time of writing, which is normal for seasonal greenhouse glazing. Order in late winter.

1. ACRYLITE 16 mm Twin-Wall

Best Overall. This is the panel commercial and institutional growers buy, and the reason is the warranty. ACRYLITE backs its 16 mm twin-wall with non-prorated, full-replacement warranties: 30 years against yellowing and ten years each on light transmission and hail. Our full review goes through the technical sheet line by line. No polycarbonate comes close to that on light retention.

The numbers hold up. Clear 16 mm transmits 86 percent of light with a 79 percent minimum guaranteed at ten years. R-value is 2.04 and U-value 0.49, which the distributor puts at 15 percent better than an 8 mm panel. Every interior surface and the top exterior carry a NO DRIP coating that makes condensation sheet off as a film instead of forming droplets, which both scatters less light and stops the dripping that breeds algae on benches. ACRYLITE is UV-stable through the whole sheet rather than by a surface layer, so a scratch does not expose unprotected plastic.

USGR carries it in Clear plus Solar Cool White, Bronze, Light White, and two HEATSTOP colors for growers who want less heat gain, and in a HIGHLUX version with wide 3 3/4-inch ribs and 87 percent transmission. The Alltop variant is the UV-transmitting version for research houses that need to pass the full solar spectrum.

Pricing. Greenhouse Megastore lists the clear 16 mm from $1,225 in bundles, 47 1/4 inches wide in lengths from 6 to 16 feet. It weighs 0.9 pounds per square foot, so a frame designed for polycarbonate will carry it but should be checked.

Light transmission is 84 percent, with a 79 percent ten-year floor, and insulation is R-1.78, U-0.56. It carries the same 30-year non-yellowing and ten-year light and hail warranties as the 16 mm.

The trade is insulation. If you heat the greenhouse through winter, the 16 mm pays for itself; if you use it to extend the season in spring and fall, the 8 mm is plenty. Greenhouse Megastore lists it from $745 in bundles, and USGR offers Light White and Manhattan Satin diffusing versions alongside Clear.

Use it on the north wall and roof of a heated house in a northern winter, or anywhere the heating bill dominates the light budget. USGR sells it by quote in widths up to 48 3/8 inches and lengths to 20 feet or more.

4. ACRYLITE / DEGLAS 3 mm Corrugated

The corrugated single-skin acrylic sold as DEGLAS and ACRYLITE Wave transmits 91 percent of photosynthetically active light, tested at 84 to 91 percent new and 81 to 88 percent after ten years. The corrugation gives a 3 mm sheet enough stiffness to span roof purlins, and the high-impact formulation carries a non-prorated ten-year hail warranty with full replacement.

There is no insulation, so this is a panel for unheated houses, roofs over shade structures, and growers in mild climates who care about light first. Greenhouse Megastore lists clear from $645 per bundle, with white and gray glare-reducing versions and a Cool Blue White that blocks UV. Greenhouse Management's product review notes that it holds its transmission where polycarbonate yellows and loses light.

5. OPTIX Solid Acrylic Sheet

Best for Cold Frames and Repairs. For a cold frame, a window-sash lean-to, or one cracked pane in a hobby house, drive to Home Depot. OPTIX solid acrylic in the greenhouse category runs from under $9 for a small piece to about $535 for a full sheet, and the store will cut it. Plain 1/8-inch acrylic transmits about 92 percent of light, weighs half what glass does, and will not shatter when the hail comes.

What it lacks is everything the greenhouse panels add: no air gap, no drip coating, no impact-modified formulation, and no warranty beyond the return desk. It also expands more than the framed panels allow for, so leave room and use flexible glazing tape rather than a hard bed.

Polycarbonate wins on toughness, weight, fire, and first cost. Acrylic wins on light, on holding that light, and on warranty. Ten points of light transmission is not a rounding error for a grower; it is a measurable difference in yield through the winter months, and it widens every year the polycarbonate is in the sun. The University of Arkansas summary is blunt about acrylic's downsides, calling it easily scratched, flammable, and prone to thermal movement that needs special anchors. All true. The people who buy it anyway are the ones running the numbers over twenty years.

Buying checklist

  • Buy by the bundle, compare by the panel. Both acrylic and polycarbonate are sold five and ten at a time.
  • Order in late winter. Seasonal stock-outs are routine.
  • Match the rib spacing to your purlins. 16 mm standard has 1 1/4-inch ribs; HIGHLUX has 3 3/4.
  • Use the manufacturer's glazing system. Acrylic moves eight times more than glass with temperature. The aluminum bars and gaskets sold for it allow for that; wood battens and screws through the sheet do not.
  • Check local fire code. Acrylic is a CC2 light-transmitting plastic with area limits in some jurisdictions. Our acrylic vs glass guide covers the classes.
  • Keep the protective film on until the panel is in. The coated surfaces scratch, and a scratch in the NO DRIP layer is a drip.
