Most of this site is about acrylic in homes, boats, campers, and tanks. This roundup covers the other end of the market: the acrylic that architects, facility managers, transportation agencies, and security fabricators specify by the sheet and the square foot. Three jobs account for nearly all of it. Dome skylights on flat and low-slope roofs, transparent noise walls along highways and rail lines, and bullet-resistant glazing in front of tellers, pharmacists, and clerks.

Each job has a different reason for choosing acrylic over glass or polycarbonate, and each has a case where acrylic is the wrong answer. The picks below are ranked by job, not against each other, because nobody cross-shops a skylight against a noise wall. Prices are quoted where they exist; several of these are specified products with no list price, and we say so.

We have not installed, shot at, or driven past any of these with a sound meter. The ratings rest on manufacturer data sheets, code and DOT documents, distributor price lists, and the field reports we could find, all cited in the linked reviews and at the end.

Skylights: daylight over a flat roof

VELUX FXG is the acrylic dome a contractor can buy off the shelf. Two thermoformed acrylic domes, a neutral-gray aluminum frame with an encapsulated thermal break, a gasket system that wicks condensation outside, and a ten-year no-leak warranty with VELUX flashing. Clear acrylic passes 92 percent of visible light, which is the point; VELUX's own glass skylights pass 38 to 64 percent because the low-e coatings that make them efficient cut light. The catch is heat: a clear acrylic double dome carries a solar heat gain coefficient near 0.89 against the 0.60 the 2021 energy code allows even for daylit zones. Order white or bronze over anything air-conditioned. At $509 to $647 for a 30-inch unit it costs four to ten times a polycarbonate dome the same size, and polycarbonate is the right answer in hail country. Full details in our VELUX FXG review.

Kingspan Bristol Acrylic is where you go when the job is a dozen skylights or a size Home Depot does not carry. Bristolite made cast-acrylic domes in Santa Ana from 1970 until Kingspan bought it in 2016; the line is now Kingspan Light + Air. It offers single or double domes in clear, white, or bronze; bubble, pyramid, double-hip, or low-profile shapes; curb-mount or self-flashing frames in plain aluminum, PVC thermal break, or poured-and-debridged thermally broken versions; curb sizes from 14 × 14 up to 92 × 92 inches in a heavy-duty frame; and a ten-year warranty against defects and water leakage. What earns it the spec-job award is the published performance table, the only complete one we found for acrylic domes: clear double dome 92 percent light, SHGC 0.89, U-0.56; white over clear 49 percent, 0.63, 0.56; bronze over clear 25 percent, 0.43, 0.56. Kingspan labels the figures estimated, and the sheet also lists external cages and internal screens for the OSHA fall protection every skylight needs. No published price; it is quoted through reps.

Both are fire class CC2, which means the building code caps them at 25 percent of floor area (33 percent for CC1 polycarbonate), 100 square feet per unit, 4 feet apart, on a curb at least 4 inches above the roof. The acrylic vs glass guide covers the classes.

Noise walls: hearing less and still seeing the sky

ACRYLITE Soundstop is the transparent noise barrier on most of the American installations that have one, from I-5 in San Diego to the Van Wyck Expressway. It comes as extruded XT sheet (15 to 25 mm) for ground-mounted walls and cast GS CC sheet with embedded polyamide threads for bridges, where the threads hold a broken panel together so no catch net is needed. Sound transmission class is 32 at 15 mm, 34 at 20 mm, 36 at 25 mm, which puts a 20 mm panel in concrete's acoustic class at half the weight of glass. The 30-year guarantee against yellowing and for light transmission is why acrylic, not polycarbonate, owns this niche; polycarbonate barrier sheet is warranted for ten. The system is MASH TL-4 crash tested with an FHWA eligibility letter and a dedicated New York DOT pay item. Ohio DOT, with more clear walls than any other state, reports no major maintenance problems. The Texas field study that found 80 percent of the gaskets failing within a year is the caution: spend on the gasket detail. Cost is quoted only; agencies put it at roughly twice a concrete wall, with FHWA guidance saying it can reach 20 times. Our Soundstop review has the field data.

Plaskolite OPTIX NB is the only other acrylic barrier FHWA recognizes for US use, and the reason to get two quotes. The data sheet gives over 91 percent light transmission, haze under 3 percent, sound transmission above 30 dB per ASTM E90, tensile strength of 11,030 psi, and widths to 100 inches, with compliance to the same European barrier standards (ZTV-Lsw 06, EN 1793, EN 1794) that Soundstop cites. Ohio told Texas researchers OPTIX NB tests at STC 32 at half an inch and 34 at three-quarters, at under 3 to about 6 pounds per square foot; its first project was Columbus in 2009. Security glazing: the window in front of the teller

Plaskolite OPTIX G BR is what most teller lines, pharmacy counters, and gas-station barriers are made of: a single slab of cell-cast acrylic, 1.25 inches thick for UL 752 Level 1 (three 9 mm rounds) or 1.375 inches for Level 2 (three .357 Magnum), uncoated or with an abrasion-resistant coating, at 92 percent light transmission with no tint. It costs $2,392 to $2,864 for a 4 × 8 Level 1 sheet, about a quarter of a UL-listed polycarbonate laminate at the same level, weighs half what ballistic glass does, and cuts, drills, and flame-polishes in the field. Its limits are the reasons installers keep it indoors: it stops a round by being hard rather than by flexing, so it can chip under repeated hits and deflect a round unpredictably, and ammonia cleaners craze it for good. The frame has to carry the same UL level as the sheet; a single-station transaction window runs about $4,000 installed. Everything else is in the OPTIX G BR review.

Spartech Polycast Acryshield L3 covers the one thing pure acrylic cannot: Level 3, three .44 Magnum rounds. Distributors describe it as a 1.25-inch non-laminated cell-cast acrylic-based alloy at over 85 percent light transmission and about 7.7 pounds per square foot, with Spartech's SAR abrasion coating, class CC2, and ANSI Z97.1 safety-glazing compliance; the same Polycast line also sells Level 1 and Level 2 sheet at the OPTIX G BR thicknesses, and distributors list its spec set in full where Plaskolite does not. A&C Plastics listed a 32 × 48 inch coated Level 3 piece at $2,016 in September 2026, about $189 per square foot. For high-risk cashier positions, detention visiting rooms, and government counters where Level 2 is not enough and the tint of polycarbonate is not wanted.

What we left out

Polycarbonate, on purpose, though it is the right choice for hail-country skylights, forced-entry security glazing, and any exterior ballistic window; the acrylic vs polycarbonate guide explains when.
