Acrylic Window Buying Guide: Everything You Need to Know
How to choose an acrylic window for a house, boat, RV, greenhouse, or aquarium: material grades, thickness, cast versus extruded, coatings, code, mounting, and what to ask any supplier before you pay.

Acrylic is the clear plastic that replaces glass when glass is too heavy, too breakable, too green at thickness, or too permanent. It shows up as an interior storm panel in an old house, a privacy block window in a bathroom, a double-pane awning window in a van, a windshield on a boat, a twin-wall roof on a greenhouse, and a viewing wall at an aquarium. Each of those is a different product with a different supplier, but they are all the same material, and the same handful of decisions determine whether you end up with a window that lasts twenty years or one that bows, fogs, or crazes in two.

1. Is acrylic the right material?
Three clear glazing materials compete for the job: glass, acrylic, and polycarbonate.
Acrylic transmits 92 percent of light, weighs half what glass does, takes about 17 times the impact of plate glass, is inherently UV-stable, insulates about four times better than glass for the same thickness, and can be polished when scratched. It scratches more easily than glass, expands about eight times more with temperature, needs 1.5 to 2.5 times the thickness of glass for the same stiffness, and burns.
Glass is scratch-proof, dimensionally stable, cheap as a stock double-pane unit, and the only thing that meets safety-glazing rules for showers and doors. It is heavy and it shatters.
Polycarbonate is roughly 250 times as impact-resistant as plate glass, cold-forms, drills without cracking, and carries the better fire class. It yellows without a UV coating, scratches worse than acrylic, cannot be polished, and costs 25 to 50 percent more.

3. Cast or extruded
Every acrylic sheet is one or the other, and it is the first thing to ask a supplier.
Extruded is cheaper, roughly $3 to $6 per square foot at 1/4 inch, holds thickness tolerance tightly, thermoforms easily, and is what home centers sell. It chips more on the saw, cracks more readily at drilled holes, and has slightly lower clarity. Fine for a flat panel in a frame.
Cast costs about 20 percent more, roughly $6 to $10 per square foot, has better clarity and chemical resistance, machines and polishes cleanly, and comes in thicknesses extruded cannot. Buy it for anything you will cut to shape, cement, bend, polish, or look through at thickness, and for anything in full sun for decades.

4. Thickness
Thickness is set by panel size, wind or water load, and whether noise reduction is a goal.
- 1/8 inch is the standard for interior storm panels, small shed and porch panes, and cold frames. It will bow in panels larger than about 12 square feet.
- 3/16 inch for larger porch and garage panes and where the panel is unsupported on one edge.
- 1/4 inch for noise-reducing storm inserts, boat portlights, and anything outdoors that a branch or a ball will reach.
- 3/8 to 1/2 inch for deck hatches, large boat windows, and small aquariums.
- 1 inch and up for aquarium and pool viewing panels, where a fabricator does the engineering.
Remember that acrylic needs 1.5 to 2.5 times the thickness of glass for the same stiffness under wind load, and that a big panel needs support on all four edges.
5. Grade and coating
Plain clear sheet is right for most jobs. The special grades are worth knowing:
- Impact-modified (Piedmont PMG Ultra and similar) resists cracking when screws go through it. For fastened panels on boats.
- Abrasion-resistant or AR, hard-coated on one or both faces, gives roughly 40 times the scratch resistance of plain acrylic. The marine and aircraft standard. It cannot be polished if it does scratch, and it costs several times more.
- UV-filtering blocks 98 percent of UV for protecting furnishings and art (Indow's Museum Grade is an example). Standard acrylic is already UV-stable; this grade protects what is behind it.
- UV-transmitting passes the full spectrum for research greenhouses.
- No-drip coated greenhouse panels make condensation sheet instead of drip.
- Tinted and opaque in bronze, smoke, blue, black, and gelcoat-matching whites, mainly for boats and RVs.
6. Fire code
Acrylic burns and is classified under the building code as a Class CC2 light-transmitting plastic. It is generally permitted in residential windows, greenhouses, skylights, and patio covers, but with area limits, for example skylights capped at 25 percent of the floor area below, and restrictions near property lines and in high-occupancy buildings. Polycarbonate usually rates CC1 and is allowed more widely. Acrylic is also not a listed safety glazing for showers, doors, or floor-level panels. Check with the local building department before using acrylic in a permanent architectural opening. Interior storm inserts, RV windows, and boat glazing are outside this concern.
7. Mounting and expansion
Acrylic moves. The coefficient is 0.00004 inch per inch per degree Fahrenheit, about eight times that of glass. A 48-inch panel over a 100-degree swing between winter night and summer afternoon grows and shrinks almost 0.2 inch. Every acrylic failure story that involves bowing, popping out of a frame, or cracking at a screw traces back to a mount that did not allow for it.
- Compression and magnetic mounts for interior storms allow movement by design.
- Clamp rings for RV windows sandwich the wall and let the pane frame float.
- Glazing channels and gaskets for greenhouse panels are sold by the panel maker for this reason. Wood battens and screws through the sheet are not a substitute.
- Fastened panels need holes oversized by at least 1/16 inch, rubber washers, and screws snugged rather than cranked.
- Sealant should be a flexible silicone or butyl. Never putty acrylic rigidly into a sash.
- Install at a mid-range temperature so movement in each direction is minimized. Dark tinted sheet absorbs more sun and needs about 40 percent more allowance.
8. Buying from the right place
- Manufactured windows (storm inserts, block windows, RV and boat units): buy from the maker or an authorized retailer with a stated warranty and a return policy. Check the warranty document, not the marketing line; terms change with ownership.
- Cut-to-size sheet: buy from a plastics supplier, not a marketplace. Say cast or extruded, give finished dimensions, order polished edges on anything visible, and keep pieces under 24 by 48 inches to ship by UPS rather than freight. Our suppliers roundup compares them.
- Home centers are right for a single small pane today and wrong for anything needing a named grade, a polished edge, or thickness over 1/4 inch.
- Amazon and eBay list a great deal of acrylic with inconsistent quality and packaging. A cracked corner on arrival is the usual complaint.
9. Questions to ask before you pay
- Cast or extruded?
- What brand and grade is the sheet, and is it coated?
- What thickness do you recommend for this size and this exposure?
- Are the edges machined or polished, or flame-polished? (Flame-polished edges can stress the sheet and craze.)
- What is the warranty on the acrylic, and on the tubing, gasket, or frame separately?
- What wall thickness or frame depth does the mount need? (RV clamp rings and compression inserts each have a range.)
- Is a blind, screen, or hardware included, or extra?
- How does it ship, and who pays if it arrives cracked?
- Does it come with the protective film on?
- For a building opening: is this material permitted here under the fire code?
10. Living with it
Clean wet, with water or a plastic-safe cleaner and a microfiber cloth. Never ammonia, never a dry paper towel. Do that and an acrylic window outlasts the frame it sits in.
What it will cost
